New York Giants April Scouting Report
Tony DeArmas
4/22/2023
Here is the April update for Giants as the NFL draft draws near:
There has been much discussion as to what the Giants will do with the 25th pick. They have several players they like at that spot but if they get a good offer to trade down and accumulate draft capital, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them jump on it. I do not see them trading to move up in the draft. Whether they move down or not, I see them possibly drafting several different positions. Cornerback is an area of need but it’s a deep CB draft so they could take one later. They also need a center but a good one could be available in the second round. Lastly, if one of the receivers they like is still available, they could possibly look to add more offensive weapons.
QBDaniel Jones is the unquestioned leader of this team armed with a new 4 yr. contract. His offensive weapons have been upgraded and he has a year under his belt in this offense. I only expect further improvement from him this year, primarily with passing yardage and passing TD’s.
RB Saquon Barkley has backed himself into a corner. He bet on himself and lost as the runningback market has cratered. He turned down a deal last year worth $12.5MM annually. That deal is off the table and in the wind. He will have to play under the tag this year and will likely get tagged next year. He also chose to sit out the voluntary OTA’s. It’s a shame as he is a fine player and good leader on this team. But the RB market is what the RB market is. I also expect them to draft a RB in the later rounds as a possible heir apparent. RB Matt Breida will be the primary backup.
The receiving corps got a much-needed overhaul and they might not be done yet if they can snag someone they like in the draft. In the meantime, WR Darius Slayton, WR Isiah Hodgins, WR Parris Campbell and WR Jameson Crowder will be the primary guys. WR Wan’Dale Robinson and WR Sterling Shepard are working their way back from injuries and will likely not be ready for the start of the season. The two receivers they like and might be available in the first round are WR Zay Flowers from Boston College and WR Jordan Addison from USC. Bothe are pro ready players.
TE Darren Waller was a huge addition to the offense. If he can stay healthy, expect him to line up all over the field and be a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses.
The offensive line continues to improve and I believe they will draft a center to further solidify it.
Stud DT Dexter Lawrence is sitting out the OTA’s as he is seeking a multiyear extension. He might be the best nose tackle in football currently so pay the man!!!
There is a possibility a linebacker is drafted but they have added a lot to the group so it would be only a depth piece unless someone of value dropped to them.
They need another cornerback so expect them to pick one up in the draft. S Brian Branch of Alabama has also been discussed so they should be looking to further upgrade the secondary.
That’s it for now.Enjoy the draft and more to come in May….
End.
