Cincinnati Bengals June Scouting Report
Mark Huber
6/6/2023

After the draft, it was a quiet May for the Bengals and June has started much the same way.

All the draft picks are signed and no free agents appear to be headed to Cincinnati.

There remains some questions surrounding fantasy football players, though.

QB Joe Burrow looks to have put on some muscle, which will help him stay healthy but also put a little more zip on some of his passes when necessary. Other than that, all quiet on the signal caller front.

RB Joe Mixon is still a member of the team. There were reports, unsubstantiated from the team’s standpoint, prior to the draft saying Mixon may be cut or may be cut if he doesn’t take a salary reduction. Nothing on that front.

Drafted RB Chase Brown was given bigtime props by those who watched the spring workouts but I’ll wait until preseason games before I get too head over heels with Brown. Regardless he appears to have a shot to be Mixon’s primary backup if Mixon remains.

WR Tee Higgins has yet to sign a new contract, though, again there is that speculation. Truth is, from my experience covering Bengals training camp years ago, this franchise doesn’t work like other so speculation is one reporters/tweeters way of going from point A to point B leads automatically to point C. It doesn’t so there’s no guarantee a deal is anywhere near.

WR Charlie Jones, another draftee, was lauded as well at the workouts with his short area quickness as a receiver and special teamers. He would have an immediate impact as a special teamer which means he will be a game-day active player and therefore has a chance to earn scrimmage snaps.

Nothing knew at tight end other than good reports on TE Irv Smith Jr who is the clear starter as things stand now.

As I said in my May report I could see a veteran coming in at some point as training camp nears. No major impact veterans but a depth piece is possible.

This coaching staff, front office and rostered players value chemistry to be sure. Any piece they add would be a good guy type of player who is willing to fit in to a role. Now if that role is as a starter, so be it, but there are not many openings for a starter in any of the three phases of the game.

End.
