Los Angeles Chargers June Scouting Report
Brad Willis
6/29/2023
There haven’t been a lot of recent changes in Chargersville. A Sports Illustrated article indicated that HC Brandon Staley’s job may be in jeopardy if the team doesn’t perform, and newly hired Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore could be a candidate for his job. While Staley’s win/loss record is respectable at 19-15 over the past couple of years, he’s also engaged in questionable play calling that I consider to be overly aggressive. Otherwise, here’s a look at the current state of the team.
QB: It’s clear that, barring injury, QB Justin Herbert will start all games, should be a top 10 quarterback, fantasy and otherwise, and possibly a top 6 quarterback. He should be selected in the earlier rounds in most fantasy drafts at this time.
RB: As with Herbert, the only Chargers running back to draft is RB Austin Ekeler, who is arguably the best all-purpose running back in the League. In fact, none of his backups have shown us enough to be in the conversation. I have concerns about a lack of depth at this position, but if Ekeler remains healthy, he should produce nicely.
WR: The Chargers have very good depth at the wideout position. While WR Keenan Allen and WR Mike Williams have strong WR2 potential each week, they have also experienced injury issues. First round draft selection WR Quentin Johnston has impressed during the offseason program. WR Joshua Palmer is solid, but probably has limited value if Allen and Williams are healthy. But based on history, he should see opportunities here and there.
TE: Veteran TE Gerald Everett should continue to get most of the looks and should be viewed as a TE2 in most leagues. TE Tre’ McKitty hasn’t shown us much, but out of fairness, hasn’t had a lot of opportunities. TE Donald Parham, Jr. seems to be more fragile than I thought. Still, I feel he is being underutilized by the team. Only Everett is worthy of late-round fantasy draft consideration currently.
PK: The battle in camp will be between PK Dustin Hopkins, and his replacement due to injury last year, PK Cameron Dicker. Dicker is only 23 years old, vs. 32 for Hopkins, while Hopkins is good, Dicker was quite accurate last season, and the team should be able to sign Dicker for a much lower price. I’m guessing that Dicker gets the nod.
DEF: Chargers defensive has the potential to be pretty good, but injuries and a lack of depth have hurt the team. Word is that second-round pick LB Tuli Tuipulotu has impressed. While it’s still early, CB J.C. Jackson has been working hard on his offseason rehabilitation from a torn patellar tendon injury, and has a chance to start from the onset, but we shall see. Good luck in your drafts and enjoy the Independence Day holiday!
End.
