Denver Broncos July Scouting Report
Charles Rives
7/4/2023

Bill Parcells: "Fellas, I go by what I see. The best players will play." Thus spoke Sean Payton!

Sean Payton’s "Joker" players (RB or TE) provide a matchup advantage for the offense. TE Greg Dulcich has a "joker" skill set, but that’s just "Dulcich hype".

RBs Tyler Badie and Jaleel McLaughlin have explosiveness and burst giving them a shot at a roster spot.

Sean Payton likes his skill players at that right-out-of-college weight.

Russell Wilson still has a deadly deep ball.

Denver has four defensive players ready to make a big leap in 2023: OLB Baron Browning; CB Damarri Mathis; DL Matt Henningsen; DL Eyioma Uwazurike.

Sean Payton believes in Jerry Jeudy.

Marvin Mims Jr., is a vertical-stretch threat who can play well off of Jerry Jeudy.

Tim Patrick & Courtland Sutton are working on the nuances of the slant, the curl, and the hook.

Patrick has been the most dependable Bronco wide receiver in recent years.

Sean Payton is working in detail on situational football in OTAs.

CB Riley Moss is doing his thing. He’s good. He moves fluid. He’s got good hips.

The 2023 Broncos are in transition, with the promise of better days ahead. This season will show Wilson's resilience and ability to bounce back from adversity. The Broncos will be a better team because HC Sean Payton is concentrating on the basics and quickly creating a totally focused environment. With Payton's meticulous offensive mind, Vance Joseph's aggressive defense, and Russell Wilson's play making ability under center, the pieces are in place for a notable improvement. Payton is a student of the West Coast Offense. A Parcell’s disciple, he has put his own spin on it by using a well-balanced, prolific passing game with a hard-nosed, power rushing attack (and some outside zone/stretch game to exploit defensive adjustments). It’s all about executing the techniques that are coached and the little tweaks Payton has in his scheme to make it work. Payton will throw in a new wrinkle with QB Russell Wilson’s mobility, foot speed, and elusiveness. Denver’s offense will look a lot like Mike Shanahan’s but with a more power-oriented rushing attack and less zone. Although gap blocking is harder to run than zone blocking (because blockers must consistently overpower their opponent), it’s also harder to stop. Its bread and butter is the power or power O play which focuses on generating leverage and power and is perfect for play action passes. So, expect to see an emphasis on play-action passing, moving pockets, and QB runs designed to get Wilson moving to loosen up defenses. Wilson will be able to distribute the ball effectively with his versatile receivers. WRs Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton will use their hands and route-running abilities to move the chains. Rookie speedster Marvin Mims Jr. will be a deep threat and potential game changer. In the red zone, Payton's offense will use the speed of TEs Greg Dulich and Albert Okwuegbunam (if he makes the team).

If they are to challenge in the AFC West, they will need a successful special teams unit. Assistant HC (ST expert) Mike Westhoff defines special teams success: "That we finish first in the league. That’s it. That’s what I care about. I don’t want to have penalties. I don’t want to make mistakes. I want to make big plays." The key for Wilson and the rest of the team is to: work hard every day, get the fundamentals down and understand what you’re trying to accomplish.

Transactions

Signed K Elliot Fry. Signed TE Tommy Hudson. Cut RB Jacques Patrick. Cut RB Tyreik McAllister. Signed WR Nick Williams. Waived RB Damarea Crockett. Cut RB Emanuel Wilson. Signed DE Frank Clark. Cut WR Nick Williams. Placed OLB Baron on PUP list to begin season.

Mandatory Mini-Camp

There was nothing but precision coaching by Payton and his coaches. There was an emphasis on special teams, with a lot of teaching on special teams as well as other positions. There was a throw-back offense, i.e., run first. There was a more explosive Courtland Sutton. There was a lot of talent at wide receiver. There was a lot of competition in the place kicking position. There was work, "not a field day" on the last day of practice. Now, there is a six week break.

Payton said of Sanders (ILB) and Mims (WR). "We have real good early glimpses of them, and they’re quickly healing." Both rookies will get plenty of time to heal whatever injuries they have. So will Perine’s (RB) bruised thumb and William’s (RB) knee.

Both starting offensive tackles should be solid, but both have injury concerns. Unfortunately, the offensive tackle and defensive line depth is suspect if there are injuries.

Fantasy Outlook

Baring shootouts, Denver will run the ball and play great defense. This isn’t a recipe for fantasy success. However, it could make the running backs into sleepers.

The defense has the making of a top-10 defense. Its success will depend on DC Vance Joseph's ability to adjust on the fly and his ability to use its strengths (secondary) and hide its weaknesses (defensive line). The key for Wilson and the rest of the team is to: work hard every day, get the fundamentals down and understand what you’re trying to accomplish. Denver needs to win now. To do that, they must avoid bad third down situations and score more points.
