Kansas City Chiefs July Scouting Report
John Cooney
7/31/2023

Dr. Gil Brovar is filling in as our Chiefs scout while John Cooney is dealing with a medical issue…

This occurred during practice this morning…

"We are devastated to share that one of the Kansas City Chiefs beloved fans, Jessica Tangen of Riverside, Mo., passed away Sunday morning during practice at Chiefs Training Camp," Mosaic Life Care said in a statement provided to KMBC News.

In today’s camp, they started out in 11 personnel (1RB and 1TE). The tailback was Clyde Edwards-Helaire (Pacheco still nursing an injury), Kelce, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Skyy Moore and Justin Watson. They later worked in Richie James, Rashee Rice, Justyn Ross and Deneric Prince. Skyy Moore was running some of the plays that used to be run by Mecole Hardman.

After seeing Mahomes get hurt against Jacksonville in the playoffs last season, they did not reach agreement with either of their starting offensive tackles from last season. They now have Ex Tampa OT Donovan Smith playing left tackle and former Jacksonville OT Jawaan Taylot on the right. They also used a 3rd round pick on tackle Wanya Morris. HC Andy Reid, who was once an offensive line coach early in his career, has been happy with his new tackles. They also have a solid interior line with OLG Jo Thuney and ORG Trey Smith. As well as Pro Bowl C Creed Humphrey. Keeping Mahomes healthy is a major priority after the scare they had in the playoffs last season

Pacheco is expected to be the lead runner with RB Jerick McKinnon retaining the 3rd down and pass receiving role. Helaire appears to be the one who will play if Pacheco is not able to. RB Deneric Prince is their rookie back who will be given a look as well to round out the backfield.

WR Kadarius Toney is still out nursing his knee injury. Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Skyy Moore, Richie James and Justyn Ross all received deep passes from Mahomes today, who continues to make impressive throws in training camp. Later in practice Rashee Rice was also the recipient of deep completions.

DC Steve Spagnuolo emphasized red zone defense today, particularly from within the 5 yard line. Charles Omenihu deflected a pass at the line of scrimmage in that drill. They also worked on 3rd down defense with CB Joshua Williams making a great deflection and S Justin Reid intercepting a pass.

End.
