New York Giants Early August Scouting Report
Tony DeArmas
8/12/2023

Here is the Giants update for the first half of August after their first preseason game. Big Blue lost to the Lions in Detroit 21-16. They had 2 spirited practice sessions with the Lions earlier in the week which helped provide some context on the roster structure. No starters played in the game. Instead, it was an opportunity for the rookies to show their wares. Several receivers did play however. More on that later. There is history with HC Brian Daboll and Lions HC Dan Campbell as Daboll hired Campbell in 2011 as the Dolphins TE coach when he was the OC there. Also, Campbell is a Giants alum. A former 4th round draft pick.

QB Tyrod Taylor played two series in the first quarter and spent most of the time running for his life. Big Blue's offensive line was banged up and the reserves struggled in pass protection all night long. Rookie free agent QB Tommy DeVito played the rest of the game. He played his high school football in NJ at Don Bosco and looked decent when he had time to throw. He might stick on the practice squad as I don't know if the Giants will carry 3 quarterbacks on their active roster.

RB Matt Breida played one series and did nothing. RB James Robinson played a couple of series and did not stand out. He looked slow in my opinion. Rookie RB Eric Gray flashed a couple of times, but needs reps. RB Jashaun Corbin looked explosive in limited duty.

WR Darius Slayton and WR Parris Campbell did not play. WR Isiah Hodgins saw limited action as did exciting rookie WR Jalin Hyatt. Veteran WR Cole Beasley and WR Jamison Crowder made some nice catch and runs. They might be competing for the same roster spot. WR Collin Johnson made his return back from an Achilles injury but saw limited action.

TE Darren Waller did not play. TE Daniel Bellinger saw very limited action. TE Tommy Sweeney caught a TD pass in the red zone but not sure if he will stick on the team. No one else in this group stood out.

The reserve defensive lineman did not stand out on run defense. The pass rush looked good however and should only look better when the starters take the field. The second-string secondary looked solid with 2 interceptions and nice coverage for most of the game.

The Giants play the Panthers at MetLife next Friday. The starters should play one half at least so I'm looking forward to that.

PK Graham Gano was in midseason form with 3 long field goals.

That's it for now.

More to come in later in August...

End.
