Dallas Cowboys Early August Scouting Report
Dr. Gil Brovar
8/15/2023
The Cowboys went into Saturday's preseason opener with uncertainty. in their offensive line due to OG Zach Martin's holdout. It is a safe assumption that the performance of the line in this game led to ownership giving Martin the raise he was seeking.
There were many notable performances in the game that could affect the depth chart.
At QB, QB Dak Prescott did not play and will not likely play in any preseason games. Neither quarterback was particularly impressive but QB Cooper Rush still has the inside track for the number 2-QB over QB Will Grier.
RB Tony Pollard did not play and the running back star of the game was rookie RB Deuce Vaughn. He did his damage in the second half against the 3rd team defense but he earned consideration for the RB2 position. The question will still be who gets the short yardage and goal carries as Pollard is not considered to be good in those situations. RB Malik Davis was unimpressive and RB Rico Dowdle outplayed him. If it were not for a costly fumble he would likely be considered the RB2.
None of the top 3 receivers played. The most notable performance was that of WR Jalen Tolbert. He has come a long way since last season and is likely to be the WR4.
The tight end room performed well, especially TE Jake Ferguson, who is the prohibitive favorite to be the TE1. Rookie TE Luke Schoonmaker will be the TE2 and an impressive game was played by TE John Stephens, who may have earned himself a spot on the 53.
The most significant disappointment on the offensive line was OT Josh Ball. This should not come as a surprise. He had failed as a backup tackle and appears to be failing as a backup guard, even against the 2nd and 3rd team defenses. He will likely not make the roster. The potential breakout was OG TJ Bass. He should be given a look in the first half of the next preseason game.
Most of the defensive starters were rested but the notable performances were had by LB Damone Clark, who was all over the field making plays, and rookie LB DeMarvion Overshown, who was impressive and made a great stop on RB Tank Bigsby in a short yardage situation. S Juanyeh Thomas has a great interception of QB Trevor Lawrence. Rookie DT Mazi Smith handled double teams fairly well. Overall, the defense played quite well considering that Jacksonville played their starters on offense against the Cowboys' second team defense.
Moving forward, the RB2 situation and the offensive line depth are the big questions now that the OG Zach Martin watch has been resolved.
End.
