New York Giants February Scouting Report
Tony DeArmas
2/17/2024
After a disappointing 2023 campaign marred by numerous injuries, Big Blue heads into the offseason with the #6 pick. It is a deep draft for top tier QB’s so there likely will be 3 quarterbacks taken before the G-Men pick. The Giants lack a true #1 receiver so they will take either Malik Nabers or Rome Odunze here. Personally, I like Odunze with his size/speed combination. I think the offensive line and defensive line will likely be addressed as well. I expect a quarterback to be drafted as a developmental type of player but in the 2nd or 3rd round. Another running back might be selected as Saquon insurance as I don’t think they are sold on RB Eric Gray as the future. I do not see them trading up and using draft capital in a major way this year.
QB Daniel Jones is rehabbing his ACL injury. I don’t think he will be ready for the start of the season. Expect a veteran free agent quarterback like Tannehill or Brissett to be signed in the off season. Big Blue is tied financially to Jones for 2024 but can walk away next year. Given his considerable injury history, I think the prudent thing here is to walk away from him in 2025. The position is too important to risk on someone who has had a history of neck injuries.
RB Saquon Barkley will not be tagged this year and will hit the open market. Hopefully, he gives the Giants a chance to match the top offer he is given. He is still a very good player and has 2-3 productive years left. If he goes, this position will be in trouble as the depth is meh. They might draft another back to give Gray some competition. I will be very surprised if RB Matt Breida is retained. His numbers last year were substandard.
The receiving corps is dynamic and pretty deep but lacking a true #1. I think this will be addressed in the draft. I do like the current group comprised of WR Darius Slayton, WR Wan’dale Robinson, and WR Jalin Hyatt.
TE Darren Waller is injury prone…but his upside is still intriguing. I think they stand pat with him and TE Daniel Bellinger.
This is now DL Dexter Lawrence’s defense, but he will get a running mate in the draft after DT Leonard Williams was traded to Seattle. There will likely be depth added to the edge group as well.
The linebacker group was solidified greatly by the addition of LB Bobby Okereke last year. I don’t think it will be addressed in the draft.
CB Adoree Jackson will not be retained. I hope S Xavier McKinney will be signed as he is very durable and reliable. They cannot afford to let him walk in my opinion. CB Deonte Banks looks like he will be a nice lockdown corner. They need to find him a partner.
That’s it for now. More to come in March….
End.
