New York Giants April Scouting Report
Tony DeArmas
4/24/2024
Here is the April update for Giants as the NFL draft draws near:
There has been much discussion as to what the Giants will do with the 6thoverall pick in tomorrow’s NFL draft. It is a draft laden with quarterback and receiver talent early. Despite hearing some trade up reports, I don’t believe the Giants are able to do that as they have several holes in the roster they need to fill and cannot afford to give up draft capital in that scenario. If the top 4 quarterbacks are gone at 6(Williams, Daniels, Maye & McCarthy), they should take either WR Marvin Harrison Jr or WR Malik Nabers at 6. Both will be excellent playmakers, something Big Blue has lacked since the heyday of OBJ. Other areas of need are cornerback, tight end, running back &linemen (not necessarily in that order!)
Big Blue has said this is still QB Daniel Jones’ team. Given his extensive injury history, it would be prudent to draft a quarterback in the second round. They may need to trade up to get someone like QB Bo Nix but it is a move worth making. QB Spencer Rattler is also a possibility in the 3rd round. The latest reports are saying Jones will be ready for the start of training camp which is a quick timeline coming off his ACL injury. I wonder how the knee injury will affect his outlook on running with the football as that was previously a big part of his game.
RB Devin Singletary is the new lead back as he leveraged a strong season last year with the Texans into a free agent contract. He is a solid all-purpose back but not the player Saquon was. I also don’t know if he’s a goal line back. They have some veteran backs in camp like RB Deon Jackson as well as young RB Eric Gray. I would not be surprised if another back was drafted to provide depth and competition.
The receiving corps currently consists of WR Darius Slayton, WR Wan’dale Robinson, WR Jalin Hyatt and WR Isiah Hodgins. A stud playmaking receiver would be a huge upgrade for this group as they are lacking a true #1. It is important to note it’s a deep receiver draft so if they go quarterback early it’s still possible they draft a receiver later.
TE Darren Waller is contemplating retirement. Please retire! He has great ability but can no longer stay healthy. A tight end might be drafted as a result to provide depth. The jury is still out on TE Daniel Bellinger.
The offensive line looks better with free agent signings like G Jon Runyan. Let’s hope T Evan Neal can finally live up to his draft status.
DT Dexter Lawrence is the best nose tackle in football. On the outside, he will have EDGE Brian Burns and EDGE Kayvon Thibodeaux wreaking havoc. They also have a good rotation of players for the defensive line. Cornerback needs to be addressed in the draft as CB Adoree Jackson was not signed and young CB Deonte Banks will need a running mate.
That’s it for now. Enjoy the draft and more to come in May….
End.
