Seattle Seahawks May Scouting Report
Rick Watts
5/10/2024

Another draft in the books and I am honestly not totally sure how to feel about it. For the second year in a row Seattle had their choice of the second best defensive players in the draft. Maybe the best this year, honestly. DT Byron Murphy is a fabulous pick and I really did not think he would still be on the board. I might have picked DE Jared Verse instead and unfortunately having him go to the Rams may make it obvious which would have been the better pick. My bigger concern is deviating from the trenches to grab LB Tyrice Knight with pick 118. That is the only pick that I could not rationalize in an otherwise reasonably logical draft with good value picks throughout.

QB-

Some are going to argue that QB Sam Howell should be in the mix for evaluating this draft. Whatever. Howell has good upside and will be behind QB Geno Smith. He is not likely to see playing time anytime soon, so the offensive line is far more interesting to discuss.

Seattle essentially drafted 3 guys to compete for guard positions. OG Christian Haynes is the top of them and he should start right away. OG Sataoa Laumea and OG Michael Jerrell could reasonably both stay on the roster as backups going into the season. That is a lot to say for sixth rounders. A lot will depend on the health of RT Abe Lucas. Also this is the year that LT Charles Cross should really establish himself and identify what his ceiling will be. OC NIck Harris will probably be in place for week one as center, but OC Olu Oluwatimi has a chance to challenge. OG Anthony Bradford probably holds the other guard spot. None of that may be very exciting right now. But I think there is a good chance Seattle is better this year on the line especially if they actually run the ball (please). I would have felt better with another guard being taken at 118 instead of Knight. But I would probably say that about a number of other positions.

RB-

Not much to talk about here as we wait for RB Ken Walker and RB Zach Charbonnet to get a chance to strut their stuff under the new coaching staff. To add conversation to the month of May we can discuss the possibility of RB George Holani making the roster as an undrafted free agent. His chances are actually pretty good and it could be fun to watch him find a place on a talented roster during the summer. He may be the new fan favorite of the summer.

WR-

So much receiving talent in this draft and Seattle did not have any receivers fall to them at the right time and place. It is hard to complain with WR Tyler Lockett, WR DK Metcalf, and WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba. And last summer WR Jake Bobo showed enough to become the talk of the locals. He did okay in the real games too. It will be interesting to see if he can take the next step this year and not drafting competition for him should help him get a chance to show what he can do.

TE-

TE AJ Barner makes a ton of sense for the running game. I like him better than Knight as a fourth round pick. TE Noah Fant and TE Pharaoh Brown will likely see an improvement in their numbers with the new coaches because every tight end had deflated numbers under Coach Carroll. They start out as my sleeper picks.

K-

PK Jason Myers. No one is competing for his highly paid job. Maybe they can find a janitor to come out and kick against him for fun?

D-

Murphy and DT Leonard Williams are going to be a lot of fun to watch this year. Seattle needs to find them help with an increased production from the edges. DE Dre'Mont Jones should be able to perform, but we will have to see if he does and if so who else steps up.

There are even more questions at linebacker. LB Tyrel Dodson and LB Jerome Baker will be the core and I suspect Knight has to be joining them. They will be new faces in a new scheme, so who knows what will happen when the first real game starts.

The same really goes for S Rayshawn Jenkins and S K'Von Wallace. Witherspoon is the solid name here and the rest of the corners we will watch fall into place. Seattle got good value in their late picks on CB Nehemiah Pritchett and CB DJ James. I think they both have a shot at making the roster even though that room is packed with talent.

Go Hawks!

End.
