Dallas Cowboys July Scouting Report
Dr. Gil Brovar
7/30/2024
There is a great deal of uncertainty in Cowboy Nation, and it may not be all the fault of the Jones family like it usually is. However, there could also be some reason for hope.
To start, there seems to be progress in the contract negotiations with WR CeeDee Lamb. It appears that a deal might get done once they agree on the guaranteed money. He will likely receive an APY near what WR Justin Jefferson received, likely making him the second highest paid receiver. It is hopeful that this can be completed within the next few days. Regarding the contract for QB Dak Prescott, it appears that while an offer has been made, there has not been a counter response yet. This will likely take a longer amount of time and it is possible that he could still hit the unrestricted free agent market after this season is completed. He is not holding out. I do not see the team letting him hit the market and I expect that he will get a deal with an APY between 55 and 60 million dollars completed before the regular season begins. If not, they will be in quite a pickle for the future as we all know how difficult it is to find a franchise QB even when you have an early first round pick. They are still likely to have a late first round pick so this could get tricky.
On the other hand, it does not appear that a contract extension for DE/LB Micah Parsons will be addressed until next off-season. It certainly cannot be completed before Lamb and Prescott's deals because they need those other deals to create the cap space to sign Micah.
As far as training camp goes the first piece of news is the season ending injury for DE Sam Williams with a torn ACL and MCL. They do not have an immediate replacement at this time, and he had been expected to be a major part of their defensive line rotation, especially since DC Mike Zimmer did not plan on using DE/LB Micah Parsons exclusively as a pass rusher this season. They will likely have to sign a veteran free agent and given their tendencies this year, it will be a cheap 1-year deal.
Rookie OT Tyler Guyton has looked very good in camp going up against the first team defense. This is very encouraging. CB Treyvon Diggs was now cleared to practice which is good news. On the downside, QB Trey Lance has not looked good in camp so far and therefore, this adds to the urgency to extend QB Dak Prescott before the season begins. They do not have any QBs on the roster that are signed for the 2025 season. We will see how Lance performs in the preseason games but so far, it is not looking good as he is having problems with accuracy, timing and holding on to the ball too long.
Let's see how things go next month as we prepare for the season.
End.
