New York Giants Early August Scouting Report
Tony DeArmas
8/13/2024
Here is the Giants update for the first half of August after their first preseason game. Big Blue beat the Lions at MetLife Stadium 14-3. They had very spirited joint practices with Detroit earlier in the week. Numerous scuffles broke out during the practices and both teams were fined by the NFL for these events. No starters played significant time during this first preseason game.
QB Drew Lock played most of the first quarter and did not impress before leaving with a hip injury. He did not look decisive in his reads and threw an awful interception. QB Tommy DeVito looked marginally better as he played the rest of the game. The offensive line looked good in pass protection even though they were second stringers. HC Brian Daboll has indicated that QB Daniel Jones will play in the next preseason game against the Texans but has not disclosed how long he will play.
Rookie RB Tyrone Tracy Jr started and looked good in limited action. Second year RB Eric Gray came in and looked solid as he ran for almost 100 yards. He had a TD jaunt of 48 yards and a short TD plunge to account for all the scoring. Rookie RB Dante "Turbo" Miller looked explosive in the second half. Unfortunately, Tracy sustained a low ankle sprain during practice this week and is day to day. Miller is nursing a hamstring injury and will miss some time. Veteran RB Devin Singletary is projected to get most of the volume in the regular season.
The starting receivers saw limited action so there was not much to report. Veteran WR Allen Robinson is trying to make the team and hopefully he does. He will provide some good leadership to the young receiving corps. Rookie WR Malik Nabers sustained a mild ankle injury in practice but he is expected to be ready for the regular season. The Giants will be careful with him in the meantime.
TE Daniel Bellinger had a couple of catches and looked OK. This position will not be an offensive focal point.
The second-string defense looked respectable. Rookie CB Andru Phillips flashed but he sustained an ankle injury in practice this week, so he is day to day.
The Giants play the Texans in Houston this Friday. Hopefully, the starters will play one half at least so I'm looking forward to that.
PK Graham Gano was not a factor.
That's it for now.
More to come in later in August...
End.
