Los Angeles Chargers March Scouting Report
Brad Willis
3/30/2025

As is usually the case, the Chargers haven’t been particularly active in the free agent market. It’s safe to assume that they will address many of their needs in the upcoming 2025 NFL draft. This report will cover some of the Chargers’ additions and subtractions, in terms of free agency, as well as looking at their draft considerations.

QB: Fortunately, the Chargers have one of the NFL’s best young quarterbacks, so QB Justin Herbert should be primed for another strong year, although he could use a few new targets. QB Taylor Heinicke should continue to serve as Herbert’s backup.

RB: Last season, RB J.K. Dobbins, a back with a long history of injuries, stayed relatively healthy and had a strong season. While Dobbins remains a free agent, it appears that he will no longer be a Charger, with rumors possibly having Dobbins signing with the Steelers. And speaking of the Steelers, the Chargers have signed former Steelers’ RB Najee Harris. So, I hate to lose Dobbins, but Harris is excellent and at 27, he should still have a few good years in him. RB Gus Edwards didn’t do much in L.A. and now he’s gone. This will be an area of interest in the upcoming draft.

WR: Only one Chargers receiver shined in 2024, and that was then rookie WR Ladd McConkey. None of the other receivers have impressed. The Chargers have resigned WR Mike Williams, and while I think Williams has something left in the tank, he’ll be 31 this year, and you know how Father Time works. This will be a major area of focus in the upcoming draft.

TE: While TE Will Dissly likely exceeded expectations, this is an area in need of a major upgrade for the team. Accordingly, they’ve signed former Jets TE Tyler Conklin to a one-year deal. But that’s likely not going to be good enough, as I expect tight end to be another major area of focus for the Bolts. Don’t be surprised if they spend an early draft pick on a quality prospect.

PK: This is not an area of focus in free agency or in the draft. PK Cameron Dicker returns as the starter, and he’s proven himself to be quite consistent and accurate.

DEF: Probably the biggest news so far is the departure of DE Joey Bosa. The Chargers have resigned DE Khalil Mack. While Mack has played well, Mack is 34 years old, and we talked about Father Time earlier. Other major areas of need include cornerback, defensive line, and with the departure of Bosa, a younger and fresher edge rusher would be great.

End.
