Dallas Cowboys April Scouting Report
Dr. Gil Brovar
4/19/2025

Other than signing a couple of retread guards, the Cowboys have not made any significant moves this month. The trade of their 4th round pick for Jonathan Mingo will likely come back to haunt them as they will not have a prime draft pick to fill one of their major needs. Their biggest needs are WR2, RB, CB and DT. They say they like their receivers although that may just be coach speak. One of these needs will likely need to wait for round 5 unless they move a couple of their 5th round picks to get into the 4th round or move down in the first round to get a second day 2 pick.

I expect that they will go receiver in the 1st round and CB in the 2nd. The 3rd round is where they need to take a RB. Last year, when they also didn't have a 4th round pick, they waited till the 5th round for a RB and there weren't any players at that position that they liked. Hopefully they have learned from the mistake although you can generally count on the egomaniacal and cheap Joneses to NEVER learn from mistakes. They would be hard pressed to even admit that they did make a mistake.

After the draft there is a chance to sign some other free agents without losing compensatory picks. For some reason, the Joneses are obsessed with accumulating these picks. I would like to see them sign WR Keenen Allen after the draft and CB Asante Samuel, Jr. However, these players usually cost more than the Cowboys are willing to pay. They have an aversion to high priced free agents and to moving up in the first round, or, in other words, doing things that the good teams do in order to win.

We shall see what happens on draft day and in May I will assess the situation.

End.
