Chicago Bears July Scouting Report

7/31/2025
We’re about a week into Bears training camp now, and as you might expect with a new offense, things got off to a bit of a rocky start on Day 1. QB Caleb Williams threw a pick on the first play and had occasional difficulty getting plays called and the offense set. Williams threw at least a handful of INTs in the first three practices, which is somewhat concerning for a guy who is known for not throwing many picks. There is a lot more pre-snap motion in HC Ben Johnson’s offense, and the players are still getting used to that. Caleb’s deep accuracy has still been an issue, and there haven’t been many splash plays from him yet. The good news is that the pre-snap operation and getting in/out of the huddle has improved in recent days, and Caleb had probably his best practice of camp today.
On the O-line, the battle for left tackle is heating up with the pads now on. T Braxton Jones, rookie T Ozzy Trapilo, and T Kiran Amegadije have split reps pretty evenly so far. Jones is still being ramped up a bit with the occasional rest day, but he has looked better than expected so far coming off his fractured ankle from last season. If I had to guess, I’d say that he’s the favorite at the moment, with Trapilo second.
In the backfield, it looks like RB D’Andre Swift is going to be the lead back, but I think rookie RB Kyle Monangai has a good chance to carve out a role in this offense. He’s not the fastest back out there, but he has very good contact balance and hasn’t fumbled since high school. Haven’t heard much about RB Roschon Johnson yet.
At wideout, WR DJ Moore has lined up in the backfield at times as the Bears figure out more ways to get him the ball in space. Deep balls to DJ have resulted in incompletions more often than not. WR Olamide Zaccheaus has quietly been a consistently reliable target. Johnson praised WR Rome Odunze for his combo of route running and contested catch ability.
At tight end, rookie TE Colston Loveland is now fully ready to go and has looked good so far, making a nice contested catch on Tuesday. TE Cole Kmet made a nice catch over the deep middle on Day 1. The tight end is going to be part of the offense again, the question is how much? It’ll be very interesting to see Johnson deploys both guys in 12 personnel.
On defense, CB Jaylon Johnson was placed on the non-football injury list before camp started with a leg injury that he suffered during offseason training. He may or may not be ready for Week 1, and that is obviously concerning. CB Tyrique Stevenson is next man up, but he has been penalized quite a bit in camp. S Jaquan Brisker is back, which is great to see. CB Nahshon Wright has been a pleasant surprise so far. At 6-4, he brings great size and physicality for a corner, which is a great fit for DC Dennis Allen’s scheme. Allen has been bringing the kitchen sink at the offense in practice, with a variety of looks not seen here in Chicago in a long time, and I am here for it.
End.
