Los Angeles Chargers Early August Scouting Report
Brad Willis
8/15/2025
This Saturday, the Chargers take on the L.A. Rams in their 3rd preseason game. Thus far, the Chargers are 2-0 with 61 points scored versus 20 points allowed, so while preseason doesn’t mean much, it’s been an impressive preseason so far. Here are some comments on the state of the team, as of this writing.
QB: Obviously, QB Justin Herbert is your starter and probably a Top 10 fantasy option. Surprisingly, the team will allow him to play this Saturday, which I disagree with, due to the possibility of injuries. The real battle is for the backup slot between QB Trey Lance and QB Taylor Heincke. While neither has impressed with their arms, Lance has performed well with his legs and may have a chance to become the Chargers’ 2 quarterback.
RB: According to the Chargers depth chart, RB Najee Harris is still listed as the primary running back, with RB Omarion Hampton listed as his backup. However, it’s unknown if Harris (eye – NFI) will be ready to go by day one. There are risks to taking both players, but of course both will be drafted. In Harris’ case, he does have an eye injury and regardless will have to split time with Hampton. In Hampton’s case, he’s unproven, and will be sharing carries with Harris. So, grab either one if the price is right, but I wouldn’t chase them due to the current uncertainty.
WR: The clear #1 option is WR Ladd McConkey, who is likely a Top 15 option. Aging WR Keenan Allen has returned to the team and is the #2. I’m not sure what to make about on again, off again WR Quentin Johnston, who periodically suffers from hands of stone.
TE: Veteran TE Will Dissly is your top option, but given potential timeshare between rookie TE Oronde Gadsen and former Jet TE Tyler Conklin, I’d consider Gadsen and Dissly to be TE2’s, until we see who does or does not get the looks. Conklin is probably not draft-worthy, but keep an eye on him, just in case.
PK: This one’s easy. PK Cameron Dicker is likely a top 10 fantasy kicker, so consider him.
DEF: The Chargers defense has played extremely well in the preseason. 34-year old EDGE Khalil Mack has had a strong preseason and appears to be defying father time. Rookie CB Eric Rogers had a strong game 2 with 2 INTs, but that may or may not mean something. Good luck in your fantasy drafts!
End.
