Los Angeles Chargers February Scouting Report
Brad Willis
2/25/2026
As I write this report, it’s February 2026, so obviously very early in the year. And accordingly, there have been very few off-season moves, thus far. Of course, this will change in the coming weeks and months. Perhaps the biggest change has been the departure of former DC Jesse Minter, who is now the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens. Here’s a look at the team as it currently stands at this early point in the season.
QB: Your obvious starter remains QB Justin Herbert. Presumably, Herbert will be fully healed from a fracture in his non-throwing hand by the time camp comes around. While backup Trey Lance is a free agent, I believe the Chargers will try to retain him. The offensive line was surprisingly poor in 2025, so look for big changes in that area.
RB: Look for a strong year from starter RB Omarion Hampton, who is widely projected to be a top 5 option. RB Najee Harris missed a lot of time due to injuries. He started the season with an eye injury (fireworks) and then suffered a torn Achilles in week 3. I think he’ll be back if the price is right, but his health and durability are concerns. RB Kimani Vidal filled in well for Harris and has the chance to remain as the #2 back if Harris is not re-signed.
WR: I suspect that the team will bring back free agent WR Keenan Allen for another year. WR Ladd McConkey remains under contract and is the team’s top option. 2023 first round draft pick WR Quentin Johnston’s 5th year contract value is reported to be around $16,000,000, and the team has until May 1st to make a decision as to whether to retain him. While Johnston has been hot and cold, and at times has stone hands, I suspect the team will keep him.
TE: The only tight end worth discussing is TE Oronde Gadsden, who showed exciting flashes during the 2026 season. I’m not sure who his backups will be, and not sure if that matters.
PK: Look for the return of PK Cameron Dicker, who has established himself as perhaps the most accurate in the NFL.
DEF: As usual, the Chargers have plenty of holes to fill in their defense, although it played above expectations in 2026. As mentioned, DC Jesse Minter is gone, and those are big shoes to fill. Other needs include Corner, Safety and EDGE.
More to come in March!
